Roles and Responsibilities of Secondary School Counselor

Role:

• To assist with the identification of students with academic, social and emotional needs.
• To develop appropriate support programs in consultation with class teachers.
• To liaise with families on individual support programs for specific students.
• Assess students with perceived problems using appropriate techniques, observations and discussions.
• Develop an ongoing monitoring system, inclusive of regular feedback, to support students with special needs.
• Provide professional development to support teachers in working with students with special needs.

Responsibilities:

• Assess student’s learning and emotional needs by working directly with them and consulting with others who are close to them
• After referral, counsel students, individually or in groups, with appropriate feedback to teachers
• Work collaboratively with the special needs committee and school management team.
• Oversee the compilation and organization of resources for both teacher and parent support.
• Keep up to date professionally by seeking and reading current relevant literature.
• Assess and present a written dossier on all new students prior to their admission to the school.
• Maintain and regularly update extensive records on all referred students.
• Attend all IEP (Individual Education Program) development meetings as an observer/ advisor.
• Provide ongoing written feedback to classroom teachers after observations and counseling sessions.
• Work with teachers to develop and deliver a social skills program.

Job Expectations :

• All applicants must hold an S2 (Master) qualification from Psychology Dept.
• Excellent English skills.
• Minimum has three years of working experience in related field
