We’re looking for a talented editor to join our newsroom and lead our science and health coverage.

The Conversation Indonesia is a non-profit media organisation producing and sharing evidence-based news and analysis from academics and researchers on our online platform, social media channels, and through videos, podcasts and email newsletters. All of our content is free to read and republish. We provide training for academics to increase their capacity to become a public voice. We share knowledge from the research sector to the public to improve public debate and to promote the use of evidence in policy making in Indonesia and the region.

Founded in 2017, we are part of a global network spread across five continents that provides a new journalism model, a unique collaboration between academics and journalists sustained through partnerships with the higher education and research sector, private philanthropy, governments, corporations and with support from readers.

Reporting to the Managing Editor/Deputy Managing Editor with general supervision from the Chief Editor and Content Director, The Conversation Indonesia science and health editor will be in charge of our coverage on science and health issues and participate in our activities to support the research sector. He or she is required to report to the head of other divisions on deliverables for projects or programs that he or she supports on an ad-hoc basis with the approval of the Chief Editor.

He or she will contribute to the innovation of editorial products of The Conversation Indonesia to ensure that research and analyses from experts can get maximum coverage.

He or she is a member of The Conversation Global network. Thus, the editor will contribute to support the global editorial collaboration. He or she will also be the focal point of coverage in Indonesia.

This position is a fixed term of six month (with an extension to one year due to performance evaluation).

Main duties and responsibilities:
Editorial

• Produce high-quality research-based content sourced from academics and researchers.
• Monitor important issues of the day.
• Build and maintain relationships with news sources in government, civil society, business, and other sectors.
• Keep abreast of research on a related section.
• Monitor content from other editions for translation to the Indonesian language, and ensure the quality of translations.
• Contribute to innovation in content creation

Community development and engagement

• Send a weekly newsletter
• Collaborate with editorial, community and design teams in developing social media content, including videos and podcasts, as well as public discussions, ensuring audience target are met
• Build and engage with a community of The Conversation authors.

Sustainability support

• Participate in The Conversation Indonesia training services as trainer and mentor
• Participate in other services to achieve The Conversation’s strategic and sustainability objectives.

Technical

• Carry out technical tasks that are needed to ensure successful implementation of The Conversation’s editorial strategies and objectives.
• Carry out other ad hoc technical tasks requested by the management team to achieve The Conversation’s strategic objectives.

External relationship

• Be an ambassador of The Conversation Indonesia, building and maintaining relationships with our partners in the research and higher education sector, government, business, philanthropy and civil society.

Qualifications

• Minimum a BA, and ideally an MA.
• At least 3 years of professional experience in journalism.
• Excellent skills in writing and editing in Indonesian and English, proven by previous work samples and passing our editing tests
• A deep understanding of specific issues in Indonesia and the Asia Pacific region related to science and health issues.
• Contacts in the Indonesian university sector

The ideal candidate will have proven journalistic experience and experience in training and facilitation. The candidate preferably has five years of work experience and has a strong network in the science and health research sector.
