ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:
(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;
(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.
The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.
The ILO values diversity. We welcome applications from qualified women and men, particularly those with disabilities and from non- or under- represented member States. If you are unable to complete our online application form due to a disability, please send an email to *******@ilo.org
IMPORTANT: Please only apply for an internship if you fulfil the following two criteria:
(1) You have no close relative serving in the ILO.
(2) This is your first internship with the ILO (only one internship is permitted).
Background
The United Nations is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion and is taking concrete steps to create a culture and environment that is open, inclusive of and accessible to persons with disabilities and staff with dependents with disabilities. This is being addressed in accordance with the general principles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS) launched in 2019. UNDIS is a system-wide mechanism for sustainable and transformative progress on disability inclusion through all pillars of the UN’s work. Together, these efforts are also central to achieving the promise set forth in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to leave no one behind.
Persons with disabilities are the largest minority group in the world, representing an estimated 15 percent of the world’s population, or approximately 1 billion people. About 80 per cent are of working age. They are a diverse, heterogenous population that face discrimination and barriers that makes it more challenging for them to access equal opportunities.
.
In Indonesia, persons with disabilities are still facing various barriers to employment due to various reasons:
Access to good education is limited, 75% of person with disabilities only graduate from primary school and below
77% of those that are working, are in formal sector
55.5% of the unemployed with severe disabilities are between 15 to 34 years old
Insufficient infrastructures that hamper mobility
Various internal barriers of the potential workers with disabilities
Low awareness from the demand side, still treating persons with disability as object of philanthropy or with medical perspectives
.
UN Disability Inclusion Project in Indonesia
The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Indonesia is implementing a Disability Inclusion Project which is part of a global programme that at this stage includes 10 countries from around the world.
The project consists of three components that aim to promote disability inclusion in UN operations in the following areas:
Physical Accessibility to Premises
ICT/Digital Accessibility
Inclusive HR Services: Engagement and Recruitment of persons with disabilities
Through this project, various barriers are being gradually removed, and UN agencies are encouraged to recruit more persons with disabilities.
.
ILO commitment to promote disability inclusion
The ILO in Indonesia is fully committed in promoting disability inclusion, particularly in employment. The work is part of the second priority of the Decent Work Country Programme (2020-2***) on Job creation and youth employment, with the County Programme Outcome IDN 126 on ” Increased capacity of the ILO constituents to strengthen policies and programs to ensure equal opportunities and treatment for men, women, PwDs and other groups in vulnerable situations”. For this, we are supporting our stakeholders in various matters regarding disability inclusion:
Working with the ministry of manpower in operationalization of Disability Employment Service Unit at regional level
Various awareness raising campaign to employers and workers, through the Indonesia Business and Disability Network
Providing Disability Equality Training to various stakeholders, including companies and trade unions
Supporting the UN in Indonesia in their disability inclusion initiatives, including review of UNCRPD and implementation of Disability Inclusion Score Card.
While the ILO CO in Jakarta is the forefront of disability inclusion in Indonesia (ILO Program Officer is the UN focal point for Disability Inclusion), we have no person with disabilities working in our office. We really need to start walking the talk.
Objective
Considering the above background and our commitment to disability inclusion, while getting the talent is really difficult in Indonesia, we would like to propose that we start with internship for two candidates:
Social Media Intern, who can assist our Senior Communication Officer in ensuring that our publications, website and other communication tools are disability inclusive.
Indonesia Business and Disability Network Intern, who will assist the Program Officer to manage and revamp the Indonesia Business and Disability Network. Currently the secretariat of the IBDN is with CO-Jakarta and managed by the Program Officer.
