Duties

The supervisory Political Specialist is responsible for supervising POL Section Locally Employed Staff (LES) and assisting Foreign Service Officers in reporting and analyzing political developments and social trends, as well as developing and maintaining high level Indonesian political contacts from within the Government of Indonesia (both local and national level), political parties, academia, and civil society.   The incumbent has primary responsibility for the embassy’s efforts on domestic politics, the executive branch, elections, and political parties, including researching and reporting on those topics for the preparation of cables and annual reports.   The incumbent will also be called upon to brief and advise political section and front office leadership on the political developments of the day.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:  At least five years progressively responsible subject matter experience in any political/labor/human rights field is required.  Of which, at least one year of supervisory experience is required.

(Please note that one credited year of working experience is equal to 40 hours/week x 52 weeks or 2080 hours.) JOB KNOWLEDGE:  Understanding of Indonesia’s political system, organization of the government structures, historical background of the country, and the nature of the political, social, and religious culture of the country is required.

Education Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in law, political science, international relations, journalism, economics, or history is required.  

Evaluations:

LANGUAGE:  Fluent in speaking/reading/writing in Bahasa Indonesia and English are required. This may be tested.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Superior analytical and drafting skills in English and Indonesian; superior contact development skills; strong computer skills; ability to take initiative and work independently to plan, organize, and execute complex reports and visits. Benefits and Other Info

Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Indonesia may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.

For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.

The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.

  Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.

** This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.
