Job Description & Summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced economist to take on the leadership of our Policy and Economics (P&E) competency as part of our Capital Projects & Infrastructure (CP&I) team in our Deals Advisory Line of Service (though our P&E work extends beyond the infrastructure sector). A career in this team will provide you with the opportunity to help develop a modern, sustainable Indonesia in line with the vision of President Jokowi’s administration, including working to address challenges related to the preparation and delivery of complex infrastructure projects as well as challenges relating to sustainable economic development more generally.

Our CP&I team helps clients plan, finance, deliver, and manage large scale capital and infrastructure projects. The P&E team also undertake a wide variety of policy and economic advisory assignments related to the sustainable development of the country and complex economic and policy questions faced by businesses. We would like to expand and diversify our P&E work, increase our focus on climate change, and raise the profile of PwC among our stakeholders, depending on the expertise of the person appointed.

Job Description

The key responsibility of the role is to lead and grow a team (currently comprising 15 staff at manager-level and below) which advises state-owned enterprises, government agencies, international development organisations, multinationals, and Indonesian companies in economics and policy analysis.

About the Role

We are looking for candidates with significant professional experience (10 years minimum), most likely gained working with an economics/policy consultancy/NGO or international organisation or in a research background (but with commercial advisory/consulting experience).

The ideal candidate will also be able to demonstrate an ability, with appropriate support, to source business opportunities and play a significant role in the expansion of PwC’s offerings and business.

Whilst the successful candidates will work across a range of sectors, we would be especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following sectors: energy and climate change; healthcare; transport; or other public infrastructure.

This role is based in Jakarta, with the possibility of travel within Indonesia and overseas depending upon project requirements.

Responsibilites

• Providing and guiding a team to provide expert advice on a wide range of policy and economics projects.
• Ensuring the execution of challenging assignments in accordance with our firm’s high delivery standards.
• Supporting the development of client relationships, and opportunities to further expand our  business.
• Working in multi-disciplinary teams and clearly communicating an economics perspective on relevant topics.
• Coaching and mentoring junior staff and upskilling them to aid their progression.
• Authoring reports based on client commissions.
• Preparing independent research and publications (sometimes in collaboration with other organisations) in order to enhance our reputation for thought leadership.
• Leading training sessions related to your areas of expertise.
• Reviewing work undertaken by the broader team in line with PwC standards to ensure a high quality of delivery for clients.
   

 Requirements

• University degree (minimum Masters) majoring in economics or a similar field. A PhD would be desirable.
• Fluency in both verbal and written Bahasa Indonesian and English is essential.
• A minimum of ten years’ experience assessing the wider economic, environmental and/or social impacts of a policy and using those to inform robust cost benefit analysis following international best practice, combined with a good ability to apply these techniques in a wide variety of contexts.
• Experience and knowledge of sector specific appraisal guidance (particularly in transport, housing or energy), ideally for several sectors.
• Experience delivering evaluations to measure policy impacts and learn lessons.
• Experience in carbon markets/climate change would be desirable.
• Experience in delivering training to economists and/or non-economists would be desirable.
• Significant experience managing a small team with a range of priorities under tight timelines.
• Experience providing complex economic analysis to non-economists in a clear, accessible manner, including the ability to draw out and simplify key insights from data.
• Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams and building strong trust-based relationships with a diverse range of colleagues and stakeholders.
